Los Angeles Exhibitions. Nikki Pressley – Elsewhere. Charlie James Gallery. October 26 – November 30 2013. Artist Reception: October 26 2013 From 7-10 P.M. Performance by Clinton Patterson. October 26, 8.30 P.M.
In Elsewhere, In Another Form, LA-based artist Nikki Pressley employs drawing, performance, and sculpture in an effort to examine how personal and collective narratives evolve and remain connected. Pressley’s work is chiefly concerned with how objects and spaces, particularly objects that point to routine domestic life and the idea of home, inform the generation of meaning and narrative.
The drawings in the show are landscape studies that use domestic space as a focal point, subtly pointing to the struggle to place oneself within a narrative and pondering how context can be lost and projected along the way. Pressley’s sculptural pieces, also in the main gallery, emerge from objects found in the drawings but are transformed slightly to create new manifestations that form a dialogue between form and function.
The investigation of continuous, connected narratives expands in the rear gallery with works addressing a specific historical subject – Othar Turner, a farmer in Northern Mississippi whose Labor Day ‘farm parties’ featured the playing of the fife, a small flute fashioned out of locally harvested rivercane. Turner’s story serves to show how personal narratives born of domestic occupation and routine become larger expressions of community, identity, and history.
