OPENING Tue 05 Nov 6-8pm. ARTIST TALKS Fri 08 Nov 5pm. Sat 09 Nov 3pm.
Place is at the heart of the photographic work in this exhibition. What is it about place in general that holds resonance for each of us?
To try to define place is to slip and slide from one idea to another…it can be a strongly felt sense of identity and belonging to a place, or the memory of a dramatic event which may have occurred there, or simply because of a visual attraction to a place due to a certain ambience or even the quality of light.
The ten photographers in this exhibition approach the notion of place with a wide range of purpose, intent and intuition.
There are panoramas, close-up fragments of places, intimate interior views, shadowy after-dark environs, meditative spaces, overlooked industrial landscapes and in-between places. And while not a travelogue, they do take us on a curious journey around the world.
Almost in all cases, whilst people are visually absent in the photographs presented, their presence is strongly felt.
Quote by Judy Annear, Senior Curator of Photographs, Art Gallery NSW on attached press release, re the power of the absence of human subjects from a photograph of a place.
