Photography. Venus from The Shadows by Petrina Hicks. National Artists Self-Portrait Prize 2013. Australia. 19 October 2013 – 16 February 2014 .
The University of Queensland Art Museum, QLD.
Petrina Hicks is one of 39 contemporary artists from across Australia invited to participate in The University of Queensland Art Museum fourth biennial National Artists’ Self-Portrait Prize.
The $50,000 prize is one of the most generous in Australia and will focus on the prevalence of the self-image in today’s networked age, with the theme for this year’s Prize being remix. post. connect. This exhibition acknowledges that identity is unstable, and that one’s sense of self is informed by multiple, often competing, influences.
The invited artists adopt various approaches that do not always conform to traditional notions of self portraiture. In each case, the artists have disclosed something about themselves, whether fabricated or ‘real’.
The winner of The University of Queensland National Artists’ Self-Portrait Prize 2013 will be announced on 18 October.
Previous winners include Ben Quilty (2007), Julie Rrap (2009) and Domenico de Clario (2011).
