TAPS (Traditional Arts Program for Students) instructor, Don Pedi, played his guitar for attentive students on the steps of Bald Creek Elementary last Wednesday.


The deadline to submit for a Regional Artist Program Grant is October 15, 2013 at 5pm. These grants, up to $1200 for projects pivotal to an artist’s career, are available to any artist, 18+ who has resided in Avery, Buncombe, Madison, Mitchell, or Yancey Counties since July 2012. For more information, call the Toe River Arts Council at 828-682-7215; to read more about the grant and to download an application, please go to This program is supported by a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council, and funds from the Asheville Area, Avery County, Madison County, and Toe River Arts Councils.


Beginning Thursday, October 17 and continuing on October 24th, November 7 and November 14, Anna Vislocky Early and Cassie Floan will hold a series of four workshops in the “Art of Printmaking” for kids 6 to 12. In this series, participants will explore a range of printmaking processes including stamping, monoprints, and photo transfers. Students will create one-of-a-kind stationary, wrapping paper, flags and more. The class will run from 3:30 to 5pm above the Burnsville TRAC Gallery at 102 W. Main Street. $60 per child.
