Judy Garb Weiss. Relentless Optimism, oil on canvas, 52 x 46 cm, no. 13276

To be opened by Dr Michael Spence, Vice Chancellor, University of Sydney. Artist Talk and Studio Visit: Saturday 21 September, 2pm.

‘The paintings within this collection are an acknowledgement of life’s variety and an acceptance of life’s conclusion. In examining the dynamics of a life fully lived and a death unencumbered, I am attempting to create works both intriguing and artful.

The images depicting objects encased within glass domes are simultaneously portends of things to come and a tribute to life’s diversity and mystery. Whether gazing into a crystal ball or a snow globe, one’s access to the future and assessment of the past are always balanced between speculation and souvenir.

And then there are those works, including images of human and animal skulls, that grapple with ever increasing intimations of mortality. They are not so much admonitions to remember death as invitations to welcome it with honesty and courage. How do we come to terms with our own death, having traversed each stage of life with considerable effort, if not always success? How do we internalize the lives of those who predecease us? It is undoubtedly a tale that, optimistically, contains a measure of compassion, humor and readiness. They are amongst the preoccupations that inform these paintings.

I hope the viewer finds a universality within these images and that they signify something within their own lives, both truthful and wry, to reflect upon.’ Judy Garb Weiss, 2013.
