Chicago Exhibitions: Meow Wolf. Nucleotide. September 6 through November 30, 2013
Thomas Robertello Gallery is pleased to present Nucleotide, a multi-media installation by Santa Fe-based art collective Meow Wolf. Comprised of a series of interconnected works by the collective’s eighteen artists, Meow Wolf’s exhibition is an immersive oceanic environment of a personified collective consciousness. The opening reception is Friday September 6, 5:00 – 8:00 PM.
Resembling the dynamic ecosystem of a coral reef in both form and function, Nucleotide is a living and breathing entity exploding with a multitude of textures, colors, shapes and motions. The works supplanted in the complex and hallucinatory ecosystem of sculpted and repurposed found objects includes a wide range of multi-disciplinary practices meticulously created by each of the members of Meow Wolf. Works flow into one another as a singular whole that envelopes the viewer in a traversable and interactive setting. Visitors are invited to explore, examine, and participate with the installation that reflects the art collective’s imaginative expression of their highly collaborative process.
Meow Wolf was founded in February of 2008 by a group of young Santa Fe residents hoping to supply an alternative arts and music venue. They have since evolved into a central hub of cultural growth for a community that was previously without an outlet; using art installations and music shows as opportunities to form relationships, welcome newcomers to Santa Fe, and provide individuals with an open space to be expressive.
Since its inception, Meow Wolf has produced eleven large-scale art installations, select group shows, a theater performance, an annual public performance event, and three award-winning short films. Working collaboratively on every level, Meow Wolf remains open to any and all individuals to take part. Participants in Meow Wolf are also welcome to create projects and lead them to fruition, using Meow Wolf’s name, standing in the community, organizational structure, tools, materials, and funding to help their project become a reality.
