American Crafts. Ideas of North. New work by Steven Heinemann. September 7 – October 6, 2013 at Lacoste Gallery in Concord, Massachusetts. Enjoy your day, Yareah friends.
Lacoste Gallery is pleased to present its first exhibition of all new work by the leading Canadian ceramic artist Steven Heinemann. Ideas of North brings together ten vessels, both open and closed, that have never before been exhibited publicly. Representing the evolution of the artist’s ideas over time and the newest directions in his work, this exhibition continues Heinemann’s longstanding interest in the hybrid quality of ceramics. In a style both classical and minimal, he investigates the natural and cultural features of clay, an organic material with a long history of human use, finding connections at the boundaries between the two.
Heinemann is the recipient of both the Saidye Bronfman Award for Excellence in Canadian Craft and the Special Award of the 2nd World Ceramic Biennale in Korea. His work is in the permanent collections of the foremost museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Museum Boymans van Beuningen, Rotterdam; Mint Museum of Art & Design, Charlotte; and the Museum of Contemporary Arts and Design, New York, among others. An internationally recognized artist, he has exhibited widely at Galerie Elena Lee, Montreal; Gallery Carla Koch, Amsterdam; Nancy Margolis Gallery, New York City; and Prime Gallery, Toronto. In 2016, the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art in Toronto plans to present a number of his newest pieces from Ideas of North.
Speaking of his recent work, Heinemann says “There’s a decidedly northern slant to many of the titles, northern, Inuit place names, as well as the exhibition title itself which is a tribute to pianist Glenn Gould’s legendary radio piece ‘The Idea of North’–potentially a kind of a talisman for those of us inhabiting this highly urbanized strip on the southern edge of a vast northern expanse, who may give thought to the role of the north on the Canadian imagination, or psyche.” He will be in attendance at the artist’s reception on September 7 from 3:00 to 5:30pm to lead a gallery walkthrough.
Gallery Director Lucy Lacoste is honored to present Ideas of North, which will run through October 6, 2013. “These are challenging, abstract works created by a world-class artist specifically for this exhibition. They are intellectually stimulating, embodying complex concepts through sculptural forms.”
