Working in a wide range of media—predominantly sculpture but also painting, drawing, photography, video, and performance—Yutaka Sone’s work revolves around a tension between realism and perfection. The artist originally trained as an architect and an almost obsessive attention to detail and its relationship to a larger whole underpin his practice at large. Whether architectural or natural, landscapes occur throughout the artist’s oeuvre, and he frequently picks his subjects from actual locations—Hong Kong Island, Los Angeles highway junctions, a mountain range, a section of a rainforest, ski resorts, and his own backyard—recreating these to scale in paint, marble, and crystal, or using organic materials such as plants and soil.
About the Artist:
Sone was born in 1965 in Shizuoka, Japan and studied at the Tokyo Geijutsu University. Since 1999, the artist’s work has been represented by David Zwirner, where he has had five solo exhibitions at the gallery in New York. An upcoming solo show will mark his first at David Zwirner, London, which will be on view November 27, 2013 to January 25, 2014.
His work was the subject of two solo exhibitions in Tokyo: Yutaka Sone: Snow at Maison Hermès Le Forum in 2010 and Yutaka Sone: Perfect Moment at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery in 2011. In 2009, Baby Banana Tree, the artist’s 25-foot tall hand-painted sculpture, was installed as a major public artwork at the Boone Sculpture Garden, Pasadena City College, Pasadena, California. Other recent solo exhibitions include Parasol unit foundation for contemporary art, London (2007); Kunsthalle Bern, Switzerland; Aspen Art Museum, Colorado; The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago (all 2006); and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2003). The artist represented Japan, along with Motohiko Odani, at the 50th Venice Biennale (2003).
Sone’s work has been included in a number of group exhibitions in the United States and abroad, including Glasstress 2011, which was organized as part of the 54th Venice Biennale at the Palazzo Cavalli Franchetti, Istituto Veneto di Scienze Lettere ed Arti (2011); BadLands: New Horizons in Landscape, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, North Adams, Massachusetts (2008); Whitney Biennial 2004, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; 25th São Paulo Biennial (2003); 7th Istanbul Biennial (2001); among others.
Work by the artist is held in international museum collections, including The Art Institute of Chicago; High Museum, Atlanta, Georgia; Kunsthalle Bern, Switzerland; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Gallery, London; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
