Francisco de Goya, painter of meat and fish. Enjoy these Still Life works by the father of our contemporary painting. Great paintings, no doubt!
The Family of King Charles IV, The Shootings of May 3rd, The Naked Maja, The Black Paintings… Francisco de Goya masterpieces are very well known and we claim he is a great portraitist, master of color and perspective, and father of main movements of the 20th century (Impressionism, Expressionism or Surrealism).
However, Goya produced very many Still Life pictures along his life. Fantastic paintings to sell to the petty bourgeoisie of Zaragoza, years before to arrive at Madrid.
Chiaroscuro, perfect compositions, vivid colors. Some artists were born ARTISTS and from the beginning, they show a singular ability to impress.
Some weeks ago, I was in the Prado Museum seeing Still Life by El Labrador (grapes and more grapes). I love Still Life works by Melendez (water melons, oranges… every kind of fruits). I admire Zurbaran and his paintings of clean pottery. We could go on.
However, Goya is different. He is not a painter of round oranges or white jugs. Most of his works are based on the idea of that meat which rots as our lives.
Yes, I know, this is a tragic idea but we are speaking about a tragic genius, who bravely faced the existence.
Furthermore, isn’t it more difficult to paint a deformed piece of meat and fat than a brilliant orange? An elusive fish than a water melon? A broken egg of cow than a flower? Goya always looked for overcoming borders.
Enjoy some of Goya unknown Still Life works and have a nice day!
Maybe you prefer to eat a piece of fruit (me too) but meat is much more difficult of painting. Our admiration, master!
Fantasy, abandoned by reason, produces impossible monsters; united with it, she is the mother of the arts and the origin of marvels. By Francisco de Goya
