Best Johnny Depp Movie. Today is Johnny Depp birthday. Now, he is 50 years old (he was born in 1963). Then, half a century and of course, half a life. A good moment to do a review of his life. In the end, the life of a great, great actor.
His first role was in A Nightmare on Elm Street, 1984, a movie directed by Wes Craven. But his fame started playing a policeman, Tommy Hanson, 21 Jump Street, 1987-1991, a series created by Patrick Hasburgh and Stephen J. Cannell.
Thanks to this success (Johnny Depp was 24 years old), he started to be called by great filmmakers. In 1990, he was the protagonist of one of my favorite movies Edward Scissorhands, directed by Tim Burton. His role is magic, nuanced, almost mythical and he started to be Tim Burton favorite actor. With him, he has played great characters: Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd, Alice in Wonderland and last year, Dark Shadows.
I like specially his role in Sleepy Hollow (agent Ichabod Crane) where once again, Depp is able of creating a character full of contradictions, we identify with him, with his rational attitude full of fears and fights against Middle Ages forces, still alive during the Enlightenment (the movie is set in 1799). Result: smart horror.
Of course, I also like Don Juan DeMarco. Depp presents himself as Don Juan, the greatest lover in the world, in our current world. People don’t accept his romantic personality and he is sent to a psychiatric hospital. There, a doctor (Marlon Brando) should take care of him. Comic and tender at the same time, the movie would be different with other actors. Don Juan DeMarco was directed by Jeremy Leven and produced by Francis Ford Coppola.
Other interesting movies are The Ninth Gate (based on a book by Arturo Perez Reverte), Finding Neverland and of course, the film series Pirates of the Caribbean. I love specially the first movie.
And you, which one do you prefer? Tell us your opinion.
Happy birthday, Johnny Depp!
