Poetry for Sunday. Gypsy Woman World: the granite god.

the granite god

sitting in the golden band

waiting on his god’s command

the gap-toothed gargoyle glances down

to see who next will wear the crown

and so the granite spirit sat

in wait of those his god begat

he waited long he waited more

not knowing what would wash upon the shore

he prayed for just one sordid soul

upon whom glory he might dole

just one wanton wicked whore

to gyrate through his heart’s locked door

but in the dark of those last days

there was nothing left but ancient haze

there was no heaven there was no hell

no sorry sinners to expel

upon the ringing of the bell

because you see

‘tween you and me

there is no all-mighty golden god

it was all in his head a fancy facade

to get him through his own dark nights

and wind his way into the light

but still

the gap-toothed gargoyle sits

  • all my gratitude and many thanks for your ongoing endorsement and support of my poetry…i remain honored and humbled…

  • This has got such a pure and classic style to it. You write so eloquently and reminiscent of the Masters.

  • thank you so very much for your kind words, melissa – i’m very appreciative! thank you! and i always look forward to reading your pieces here…they strike a chord in us all…

  • Trish

Beautiful! You outdo yourself every time, Gypsy!

  • there are some pieces where the rhythm seems to work well – and i think this is one – it was written in response to certain word cues – gyrate and gap-toothed gargoyle – and one or two other words which escape me at the moment – anyway, it was fun doing – thanks so much for your kind words, trish, and for your unswerving support!

Since childhood, Ms. Gilstrap has had a love of words-of writing and other arts. An individualist, she chooses not to follow any pre-conceived pattern for the outlay of these words – rather, she allows them the freedom to forge their own path as they make their way from her heart to pen to paper. Her art work involves both photography and mixed media on large canvasses. She is a weekly featured poet in Yareah Magazine where her works have appeared for more than a year. Her piece The Granite God was the winning poem in Painted Bride Quarterly Sidebar #12 [2012]. Her work has been featured in performance poetry theatrical productions in Louisiana and her short story, Retribution, published in the Helicon Literary Magazine there. She and her gypsywomanworld blog are included as character/story elements in Ghost Key, the fictional work of award-winning author Trish MacGregor. Her first volume of poetry [2013], words unspoken, is available in both paperback and on kindle at amazon. She currently divides her time between her home in Louisiana and the east coast as she completes her second volume of poetry to be published in 2013.

As the cricket season draws to a close, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) can report a surge in popularity for guests seeking a full day of luxury hospitality at Lord’s during a Test Match in 2016. In the Home of Cricket’s most iconic venues – the Captains’ Lounge and Marylebone Suite – hospitality packages which included a hearty breakfast, sumptuous four-course lunch and luxury afternoon tea, sold out quickly for the first three days of the England v Sri Lanka and England v Pakistan Investec Test Matches. Private Boxes with the best views of the action for up to 18 guests also sold out fast for the same days. MCC revealed a sharp increase in revenue for its 2016 Sri Lanka Test Match hospitality packages compared with 2014 when the team last played England at Lord’s. Revenues for hospitality were up by nearly 30% over the same period in 2014 whilst private box sale revenues were up by a healthy 60%. Nick Kenton, MCC Head of Sales, Meetings & Events and Hospitality, said: “2016 has been a fantastic year for enjoying a day of cricket whilst experiencing the very best food, drink and hospitality that Lord’s has to offer. “This year’s sales figures show that hospitality packages at Lord’s were in huge demand and continue to be a key part of the summer sporting calendar.” Lord’s also expects high demand for its new hospitality packages, to be released this autumn for 2017 matches. These include England v South Africa from 6th to 10th July and England v West Indies from 7th to 11th September. Packages for the England v Ireland Royal London One-Day International on 7th May 2017 are also expected to sell out in record time. Details of all hospitality options at Lord’s can be found on its website
