Sabina Lee Gallery is pleased to present Apart of the City, a joint exhibition featuring Jung Hwa Lee and Max Rain.
Max Rain is fascinated by Los Angeles in its ability to seamlessly blend contrasting aspects of its cultural environment. Rain reaches outwards into the daily life of the city in order to capture fragments of the cosmopolitan story. With broken shards of sidewalk from Hollywood Blvd lining the sides of his thick ceramic works, Rain uses the material presence of the city to platform its ephemeral tableaus.
Falling behind in a fast paced environment can become a whirlwind of increasing isolation. For Jung Hwa Lee, the overwhelming social bearings of Los Angeles incite hermetic versions of the city. Lee blends idealizations with insecurities to build Los Angeles as it exists in her own personal space. Thus the city is experienced through a dream of its escape. Lee positions porcelain sculptures before flat images as conflicting, intertwined realities.
Feeling as though they are both a part of and apart from the city of Los Angeles, Jung Hwa Lee and Max Rain explore splitting the difference in Apart of the City.
Max Rain received his BFA from San Jose State University in 2007 and his MFA from UCLA in 2011. Rain has exhibited in the US and Ireland. Jung Hwa Lee received her BFA/MFA from Hongik University in Korea and in 2011 received an additional MFA from UCLA. Lee has exhibited widely in the US, Korea and Japan.
