Les Bains, Residence D’Artistes. The Book

The book Les Bains, Résidence d’artistes is published by Drago on June 22nd, 2013. This 192-pages beautiful book traces the four months of the ephemeral artistic residency at the Bains, the legendary Parisian club. The project ranges from January to April 2013 – project suggested by Jean-Pierre Marois, curated by Magda Danysz and with Colombe de La Taille (ADL conseil) in charge of event production and communication. Along with the photos taken by Stéphane Bisseuil and Jérôme Coton, the readers will discover for the first time the diversity and richness of the artistic expressions by the 50 artists who took part of this secret and non-open residency.

From the first pages, Jean-Pierre Marois, owner of this place and initiator of the adventure, make us come into the heart of the legend of this place. With passion, he tells about the story of the great moments of Les Bains which stood out with whole generations. He says “the necessity to protect, renew, reinvent, and save this icon of the Paris Life”. Then through more than 200 never-published together pictures we discover the secret project, the hidden residency. Stéphane Bisseuil and Jérôme Coton were the only photographers to be allowed to enter this venue and join the crazy adventure. They immortalize this artistic residency from the empty spaces to the final works. Each day they came on-site with the rigor of reporter. They get every moments, they archive every step of the works on progress from the beginnings of the creations to their achievement. This book, Les Bains, Résidence d’artistes, stands out as the only visual testimony of these works intended to disappear. As Sophie Peyrard, the French journalist, wrote at the very beginning of the adventure: “Be sure, the project is ephemeral but it will stay in memory for a very long time”.

Writing on walls by Jacques Villeglé, two-colors spray-cans painting by Gérard Zlotykamien, in situ installations by Sambre or Thomas Canto, poetic painting by YZ, collages by L’Atlas or works with hammer-drill by VHILS, the various and different types of street-art expressions are mixed and call out to one another in every hidden place of Les Bains so that this book draws up a rich panorama of the street-art.

Extract: « Artists from Los Angeles, Lisbon, Rome, Copenhagen, Berlin and Paris have participated, and some of them even stayed in the large four-bedroom apartment, the only heated area in this freezing building on this harsh winter.

Everyone has taken part in this adventure with the same energy and generosity. (…) Naturally, the dancing shadows of Basquiat, Warhol and Haring, were haunting the place. In a dark recess and under the mere light of our mobile phones we discovered, Magda and I, tangible relics as Space Invader’s mosaics from 2002 and a fresco made by the American artist Futura dated back from November 1983.» Jean-Pierre Marois

Inhabited by the soul of this legendary building, the reader lives again page after page the sensitive experience of this ephemeral creative site.
