Fashion Design Summer Camp in Chicago IL. From 7 years old through teenage. Your children can enjoy a different holiday.
Treat your kids to a unique kind of fashion summer camp to learn various design techniques (dyeing, painting, and fabric manipulation), sewing, and patternmaking skills. Offered in weekly segments by the not-for-profit, Urban Threads Studio (UTS), located in the new Fashion Design Center at the Bridgeport Art Center, 1200 W. 35th St.
The camp’s mission is to teach creative problem solving through textile arts in a nurturing and community-building environment. All materials will be provided. Students, from 7 years old through teenage, will show off their handiwork to family and friends at the grand finale fashion show the last week in August.
The camps are run by Michelle Santoro* and Ilona Mestril*.
UTS is a D-I-Y (do it yourself) collaborative studio that works with children and adults to introduce the wonderful ancient craft of sewing and textile art with a 21st century twist.
*Santoro is a former boutique owner and has also worked on costume design and construction at Chicago theatres such as Goodman, Chicago Shakespeare, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, DePaul University, and was instrumental in establishing the Fashion and Textile Museum in London together with British designer Zandra Rhodes.
*Mestril is the founder of Kinderwerkstatt, a language immersion through game, craft, and music program in San Diego and Chicago. The San Diego chapter evolved into the internationally acclaimed Albert Einstein Academy while the Chicago chapters continue to thrive.
