WE WALK WAVES OF JOY, CARRY OCEANS OF REGRET from James Goertel’s bi-weekly poetry feature, Under The Same Moon, taps Spanish poet Antonio Machado for inspiration.
WE WALK WAVES OF JOY, CARRY OCEANS OF REGRET
You have walked on and on,
your own shadow a ruin, a rune.
Your footsteps are not gone, not victims of wind, nor rain;
you carry them with you.
The little boy still stands in your shadow.
Here, where you stand, in a clearing,
axe still in hand, sweat beading,
the taste of salt from your lips
upon your tongue –
this is evidence of the journey.
“Walker, there is no road, only foam trails on the sea,”
We walk waves of joy, carry oceans of regret.
