Al Munro’s practice continues to explore the patterns used to inscribe the natural world. Patterns from an invisible world is the culmination of Munro’s visual research for her PhD at the Australian National University in Canberra, investigating the underlying atomic structures of crystalline matter in order to position her coloured markings into constellation-like arrangements. For this body of work Munro has also zoomed into some of these markings to produce crocheted pieces that provide a closer point of magnification and exploration. Thee works essentially visualise the building blocks of both the natural and man-made worlds. Munro’s adoption of the scientific field of crystallography provides a cross-disciplinary examination of an already interdisciplinary sphere.
