HEART OF DARKNESS from James Goertel’s bi-weekly poetry feature, Under The Same Moon, listens closely to the rhythm of life – from first breath to last beat.
Pushed back into the earth;
Muffled strains, suffocated
Crescendos still, but barely, audible;
Calando, affanatto through
The hollow, rotten willow; mute
Witness in a childhood backyard.
Reaching through roots, darkness,
Veins its way to a weathered heart
Hardly humming, trembling in treble;
Morning, noon, and, now, night;
Burying a chorus of years
In a lament, grave and unforgiving.
