Good Friday. Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane

Good Friday. Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, by Salzillo

Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane

My friends sleep

dreaming of women

soft as grapes, firm as olives,

sweat like salted oil

on warm bread,

sleek avocado evenings.

My eyes are sharp with fear.

I know Judas;

his promiscuous urge to please

is a kind of love, seductive as vinegar.

Even the Romans he woos.

He steals one friend’s wine to win another.

Thomas says: To know is to love.

And that is the noose which binds us.

This dawning breaks my heart.

Here comes Judas

whispering with friends,

their swords keen as new money.
