Nature Power Beauty and Strength by Zach Fishel

The Sea of Ice by C D Friedrich

This Rushing

Praying for the endless waving

of earthquakes, cursing into voiceless

sounds from the telephone

as it rings through hope

less laugh

plunking down like the lids of

unthreaded saltshakers

complaining against cloudless

drives on the interstate,

forced to watch the violent finger

painting of puzzled angels,

recalling how Lazarus

never hurried back.

Under and wrapped

In a roll of fishing line,

nori neglected

at the front of cutting boards,

the swan struggles to stay

together as wings,

waves clouding

songs on the surface. Alto

Cumulus arrangements

like toothpaste

conjured to the corners

of your mouth.

Kissing the lost

parts of the Madonna,

We’re dogs behind

the churchyard dumpsters

asking for incredible

forged in the click

ings of bicycles

and baseball cards.

Always back

to nothing

less attractive

than bent-up

bobbi pins

Sawdust clings to the tired

tires of tractors

treading dawn

so flatly without effort

less stress

against the

dewed hoods

of rusty trucks

as thermoses

fill their holders

and men with

dirty palms

hold their

wives in an embrace

braver than the up

turned soil

every season

beginning each

with enough trust

that it will be again.
