Ceramics and Painting by the artist Christof Mayer.
I´m an autodidact and stumbled upon handicrafts and ceramics “accidentally” in the occupational therapy workshop of a rehabilitation facility, 15 years ago. For lack of time I have abandoned this operation after a short time.
Only about 5 years ago, the need for a vocational realignment brought me back to arts and crafts. Subsequent the conscious exploration of art and the search for alternative forms of interaction is the main motivation of my work.
The combination of ceramics and painting is a good way to create objects that bring attention. Glazed ceramic-colors are saturate, bright and have a nice shiny surface. It brings the form to better advantage, make the object more living and it is a good eye-catcher on the World Wide Web, which is my primary access to the public. For my job, the internet and social networks are the ideal medium to come in contact with a wide audience directly and personally.
It´s my goal to make pottery, which convinces by itself and build a relationship with the viewer, without needing professional art education and without the need of special social and cultural conditions. Accordingly the success of my work and the good appeal to the public is not based on the involvement of interlinks such as curators, gallery owners and educators, but is explained solely from the direct impact of my artwork to the viewer and thereby spontaneously triggered feelings, thoughts, needs.
In this regard, it´s my wanting to create serene and cheerful items. Sculptures should be decorative and inspiring. Commodities such as coffee- and tea cups should invite for usage and enrich and intensify a pleasurable experience.
Recently, I am working with non-figurative color compositions. Here it is my intention to transcribe concept and idea which stands behind my ceramic works, to paper and canvas. So I want to create images that break up, decorate, entertain, inspire and bring vibrancy to everyday life. It should be an easy to receive kind of painting that, like my ceramic work, is not based on special framework conditions for art education, but is suitable for a presentation on internet platforms and social networks. Essential for this type of painting are movement and color and the arrangement of surfaces and colors as well as their proportion to one another.
Colors are often not applied with a brush, but thrown to the canvas or poured. They trickle into each other, it creates new forms and new colors. The process is repeated several times. Figures emerge and interact with each other and with the observer. There are envolving limits, outlines, symbols and signs becoming recognizable. Often I add constructed elements to things which are made by spontaneousness and coincidence. Ordered structures contrasting chaotic passages; it creates suspense. Chaos and organization solicit attention and demands the viewer’s interest.
This type of painting offers many options and therefore a lot of development potential and future opportunities for me personally. I am just beginning and I see a lot of ways, some of which I would consider and pursue closer. Those interested are invited to follow my activities. On the Web I´m located at the following places:
