Australia: Fire hits over 400,000 hectares, also in Tasmania. One of the worst summers in its history.
In Australia, it is summer. It’s funny for people in the northern hemisphere to imagine Christmas celebrations lying on the beach and with heat… Who is that man surfing with a strange red suit? Santa Claus? Yes, everything is different in Australia. A big fantastic country full of friendly people!
However, every summer they have to face the terrible problem of wildfires. This year is being particularly catastrophic since fire has hit over 400,000 hectares.
Even Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, has visited the firefighters who work in the state of Victoria, where wildfires has ravaged this week over 400,000 hectares, according to ABC radio.
John Howard has warned the firefighters and residents of this region in the Northeastern about the summer. It will be “very long”, because this year fires have started earlier than in previous seasons.
Howard, who will also visit today the state of Tasmania, severely affected by the fires, has also said that his administration intends to send more security forces to Victoria, where more than 3,000 firefighters and soldiers are trying to control the fire. Also, another fire that advances through the Gippsland region, is leaving the city of Melbourne covered by thick smoke.
The president noted that the federal government used to cover 50% of the cost of damages caused by natural disasters, but in special circumstances such as the present, they will pay 75%.
Fires are a global catastrophe, one more left by the terrible 2012, full of crisis and natural disasters. Since 2013 has just started, we hope that Australia can solve this tragic problem soon and people can have a peaceful summer enjoying their beautiful landscape and modern cities. Go on! You are strong people and you know how collaborate together to get what you want. Yes, go on!
