Funniest News of Art. The Worst Restoration of a Religious Painting, an Ecce Homo in Borja (Zaragoza), Spain. Artist: Cecilia Gimenez, age 80.
Last August, in Borja, a little village in the Northeast of Spain, near Zaragoza, had an unexpected surprise. Cecilia Gimenez, age 80, started to restore the Ecce Homo of the church. Nobody had ordered Cecilia to make this work, although she had restored other pieces of the church in the past… but years ago, we suppose! This time, Cecilia wanted to be an artist, we will say an Expressionist artist…, or maybe Dadaist! And she turned a painting of the 19th century into an Expressionist Ecce Home to surprise of the priest and of all neighbors.
The Council time said that Cecilia was not allowed to do that. Firstly, because a previous study would have been essential. “It’s just a personal good intention that in the end, has finished in a disaster.”
Cecilia Gimenez has claimed she painted with ‘good intention’ but afterwards, everybody started a little battle to decide who will have the profits that have produced the numerous visits the church is now receiving to see the ‘great’ work and, why not, to laugh a little.
Spain has so many Ecce Homos and churches that the lost is not a tragedy but we wish this lady never comes into the Prado Museum, her artistic impulses could transform the masterpieces by Velazquez or Goya in some kind of Manga drawings.
Spain is a land of artist, no doubt, Cecilia Gimenez is another example of a follower of Picasso…, at least, she believes in her great possibilities of becoming a famous artist throughout the world.
Thanks, Cecilia, at least we have some fun those days!
