Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901
In two days, it will be Walt Disney anniversary. I know it very well because I was born on December 5. Then, all of my life I’ve been celebrating my birthday with Walt Disney reports on TV: documentaries, news, homages… every kind of honors for one of the biggest artist of the 20th century.
Yes, to me he was an absolutely artist. He innovated the world of cartoons and the world of cinema (later, the world of holyday resorts too). Not bad for a man who learned to draw in evening courses in Chicago but in the end, art is a gift and he had the gift.
The first time I went to a movie theater, it was to see ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’. Since then, I’ve seen this movie hundreds of times and I must confess that the reason was not to accompany children. I love this film! I don’t stop to admire its marvelous drawings. In my opinion, far better than those made by computers today. Foreground figures move but the background is always full of birds, rabbits and trees moving too, in countless small stories.
And how about ‘Bambi’? Several years ago, some adult men came at home to take a coffee. My little son was watching Bambi and they started to see it. In fact, they became engaged to movie and in a moment, they began to cry! Do you imagine 40 y o men crying a cause of ‘Bambi’? Yes, Bambi is terrible emotive… and all of them: ‘Sleeping Beauty’, ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘Pinocchio’… and ‘Fantasy’. Fantasy!!! Incredible music and incredible cartoons. Salvador Dali was working in this project. A shame he didn’t understand with Disney. Too excessive personalities, I suppose.
Now, I see internet is full of news and pages about Disney World and Disney resort and few about Walt Disney, the artist. Then, I think this week is a good moment to honor that great man.
