Count Vampire. The truth of Count Dracula: Vampirism or Lie?
In a dangerous world, in a little county, in a forgotten land constantly invaded by armies of whatever provenance and religion (Catholic, Muslim, Orthodox…) an Earl, a simple Count in a small castle, got to be independent from almost 10 years. He was Vlad Tepes or Vlad III Dracula, Count Vampire of Transylvania.
In the middle of the 15th century, Transylvania was a poor region in the Carpathian Mountains. It was a land of confrontation between the Turkish Empire (ruled by the Ottoman dynasty) and the Christian kingdoms of Europe. The previously rich Byzantine Empire was now reduced to Constantinople (Istanbul) and survived paying high taxes to the enemies and thanks to strange allies. The most famous was Count Dracula.
It seems he spent his childhood with the Turkish, as a hostage, to prevent his Christian family to attack the Muslim territories. It seems he escaped soon and once in his county saw too many intrigues and treasons. He hated Turkish people and now, he hated Christian novel families too and also, poor people.
He decided to be offensive with everybody, he needed to be feared. He started inviting the beggars of his county to a dinner and he burned all of them by useless… Dinners would be very dangerous for noble families too… A legend had started.
A legend based on fear, a legend built by Count Dracula to get his enemies out of his land borders. His little castle, always surrounded by impaled people, always smelling to death was a vision which provoked nightmares, horrible tales, and even stories about necrophilia spread around Eastern Europe.
What about eating enemies’ hearth to increase his terrible legend? No…, too quick. A dramatic death must happen slowly…, bloody…, drop by drop…, slowly.
Impaled victims dying slowly in the highest hill of his county, bleeding from their guts. Everybody could see them, exhibited during days, suffering.
Who could do such a thing? Only a demon, maybe he was not human.
But Vlad Tepes hadn’t got a big empire with thousands of subjects. He had a little county and people knew him. He was even handsome. However, what did it happen at night? Among shadows things are different, among shadows are demons walking the Earth.
Count Vampire knew the gossips. He had promoted them. Then, he started to go out at night and during the day he was closed in his tour, observing his subjects, choosing one to kill in the darkest hours, as old Greek vampires did, as he had read in the ancient books, as he would written if he was a minstrel. Yes, if Count Dracula was a minstrel, born in another time, he would write a novel titled ‘Dracula’.
What would Bram Stroke have done if he had been a medieval count?
**Count Vampire was assassinated in late December 1476. His body was decapitated and his head sent to the sultan.
