The Downtown Art Center (DAC) Gallery is very pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of Los Angeles based painter Jason Miracle, Barbarians at the Gates.
The exhibition presents a collection of over twenty paintings by the Kentucky-born and Florida-raised artist whose paintings are both carnal and lustrous. Influenced by his fascination with theological icons, fringe science, graphic novels, and pop-culture icons, Miracle’s work presents a visceral juxtaposition of iconic symbols and organic forms, both body-like and ambiguous. The bright palette and familiar elements of the paintings are subverted by underlying themes of brutality.
As a body of work, “Barbarians at the Gates” investigates the notion that man’s natural state is a savage one, and society only precariously exists through the collective will of humanity. Theology and science play an important role within the works, their symbols either painstakingly camouflaged or featured prominently within each tableau. This symbolism serves as a reminder of our attempts to “neuter our savage selves”.
Jason Miracle was born in Hodgensville, Kentucky, raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California. He is a graduate of the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. He worked extensively within the graphic design and illustration fields. In addition to his practice as a painter, he is currently Special Projects Manager for the Exceptional Children’s Foundation (a nonprofit organization) where he manages the production of art framing and creating artist canvases.
