Scary Books to Sink Your Teeth Into

Scary Books to Sink Your Teeth Into

Yesterday, I was Reading some commentaries about my articles and afterwards, we were speaking about writing books now a days. No, I don’t like the published books today but… who the hell can like them? I loved reading books but, since I became an author, I’ve preferred to read another things because… no, I am telling lies again and again. When I was preparing myself to write my first book I was interested in bestsellers –sorry- and I was able to read hundreds –I was something like a machine and I could read one book in two days depending on its pages-. I was interested in informing myself about the likes of people in different countries. Of course, I began with Spain and our ‘high’ literature –of course, I’m joking-. In Spain I’ve found Spanish books –of course- and foreign books. I have just one thing to think: what were they thinking about? Doesn’t the authors respect to themselves? What happened with something called before ‘literature’? Were the authors calling the readers idiots? Have the current authors got a mental problem?

Sorry, I know… not all of the bestsellers are an… absolutely stupidity but… have someone written some interesting thing in these last ten years? Yes, in 2006 Cormac McCarthy wrote The Road, a great novel but… I must ask myself: just him? Has no another author been able to write anything respectable? I’ve read novels about vampires and I thought:

‘Vampire, vampire of green eyes: you should have bitten the author.’

In the last ten years we have the formula of The Da Vinci Code and this author is supposed to have invented the formula. Another more question: don’t you remember Umberto Eco’s The Name Of The Rose. That was a great novel with an intelligent structure, not the… well, I should be quiet because I don’t like to criticize. I know Dan Brown is a good writer… his structures are respectable and he knows how to interest the public.

Barbara's Bestsellers

Barbara’s Bestsellers

Thinking about Mr. Brown and bestselling I obtained my poor conclusion: if you sell a book to make a movie you can win a lot of money and authors, like other species in this world, have to eat and drink and pay the school and, maybe, we need a car to go to a bridge for our secure suicide. Yes, if you write a not very literary book you can be adapted to cinema and this is a terrible problem for authors who want to write good novels. The bestselling process is something like ridiculous if you think that you need to write a novel that became into a film to sell books. Yes, Dan Brown sold thousands of books before Tom Hank’s filmed. Here it is the next problem. This bestseller created a tendency in publishers and then publishers just want to use just that formula. Yes, Da Vinci Code is not a bad book but thousands and thousands of imitations collapse the book shops and the readers and then, we have something like… (mute).

Then, every publisher can use one or two of these formulas to create its editorial lines and ,  when we want to read a book and we go to a book shop we can find titles like:

Book of the Day! The Diary of the vampire Pippy Jones (omg)

From the acclaimed author of Bambi’s Lover and Caligula Code, here it comes the new (surrealistic, of course) adventure… The Name of the Poppy!

I hope these authors all the best and, when they will obtain the famous million dollar for their books, I hope they will begin writing better books –but of course I doubt it-.

I promise tomorrow we will talk about something happier like taxes. Be happy and please, read something interesting.

As the cricket season draws to a close, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) can report a surge in popularity for guests seeking a full day of luxury hospitality at Lord’s during a Test Match in 2016. In the Home of Cricket’s most iconic venues – the Captains’ Lounge and Marylebone Suite – hospitality packages which included a hearty breakfast, sumptuous four-course lunch and luxury afternoon tea, sold out quickly for the first three days of the England v Sri Lanka and England v Pakistan Investec Test Matches. Private Boxes with the best views of the action for up to 18 guests also sold out fast for the same days. MCC revealed a sharp increase in revenue for its 2016 Sri Lanka Test Match hospitality packages compared with 2014 when the team last played England at Lord’s. Revenues for hospitality were up by nearly 30% over the same period in 2014 whilst private box sale revenues were up by a healthy 60%. Nick Kenton, MCC Head of Sales, Meetings & Events and Hospitality, said: “2016 has been a fantastic year for enjoying a day of cricket whilst experiencing the very best food, drink and hospitality that Lord’s has to offer. “This year’s sales figures show that hospitality packages at Lord’s were in huge demand and continue to be a key part of the summer sporting calendar.” Lord’s also expects high demand for its new hospitality packages, to be released this autumn for 2017 matches. These include England v South Africa from 6th to 10th July and England v West Indies from 7th to 11th September.
