Natasha Trethewey was called United States Poet Laureate. She won the Pullitzer Prize Poetry in 2006 for her collection Native Guard and she is also Poet Laureate of Mississippi.
She works combining free verses with traditional forms like sonnets and the Villanelle and she talk about the “memory of the racial legacy of America”. She spoke also about the American Civil War. In her own words, she could not have “escaped learning about the Civil War and what it represented”.
