Houlton, Maine June 5TH 2012 The 18-piece public art commission “The Practice of Balance” by artist Brian Mark is now on view in the Houlton Court House.
“The Practice of Balance”
Lady Justice moves forward practicing the art of balance while being guided bythe wisdom from the North Star, the State of Maine. To portray the faith of people of Maine in the constant guidance of our Justice System,Lady Justice is flanked by images from the State of Maine coat of arms. The seaman to the left looks to the North Star for direction and safe passage through perilous waters, while the farmer to the right depends on the same star to guide faith to sow. (Above shows 5 of 18 images located throughout Court House)
“The Practice of Balance” uses haunting medium to inspire viewers.
The work compels viewers to examine the complex balances within the Judicial System by combining traditional symbols of the Justice system and the State of Maine.
Mark’s unique medium of acid on stainless steel also requires a level of participation from viewers as the hologram-like images, created from precious metals, seemingly appear and disappear depending on the light and position of viewer.
