Antonio Matragrano: artist, traveler and curious about life.
Antonio Matragrano was born in Cosenza (Italy) in 1958. As a young man in search of adventures, he interrupted his studies and landed to Germany, Canada and the United States where, inspired by the Prehistoric graffiti of the caves of Altamira and Lascaux, he started producing his first drawings.
Upon reaching 26 years, he returned permanently to his homeland, Cosenza, where his artistic life began. This life was never easy but a strong determination and the inspiration he found in Basquiat, gave him the strength to go ahead.
2005 was a turning point in his artistic life. This was, in fact, the year of a metaphoric trip into contemporary arts: “Icons” refers to the production of a number of female figures more or less known in the stars system, depicted as Saints and Icons. These contemporary Icons represent women’s transformation from primordial source of life into divinity. This transformation takes life through a complicated work of collage-painting that goes beyond a mere technical work. This reflects the transformation that every woman has within herself, i.e. the infinite.
Over the years, he has been looking for his real muses, special women able to inspire feelings and whom he selects carefully. In 2009, director Nicholas Deorsola, fascinated by his work, choose some of his large abstract paintings for its movie ‘VORREI VEDERTI
