Twelfth tree and letter: “Peith” (“P”).
From 28 October to 24 November, the Celtic alphabet was presided by the rosy viburnum, an ancestor of our elder, the tree of the last month, growing at the water edge, Lady of the Lake’s home, who gives her power (symbolized by Excalibur) to anyone who becomes king of his actions (Arthur, Osiris, Achilles…).
Thirteenth tree: last season.
“Ruis” (“R”), our elder tree. It’s the tree end. Always associated with witches, in the superstitions of all of the Northern Europe was banned for cribs of children, which are traditionally made of birch, to assured them a long life.
It has always been an unlucky tree: Judas hanged himself in an elder, King William Rufus was killed by an archer in an elder stake and there are legends that relate the wood of the cross of Christ was made of elder.
– “To burn elder at home attracts the devil,” the folklore of many places says.
Even today, throughout Europe and America, number 13 is bad luck.
It dominates from 25 November to 22 December.
What about the extra days? Are those of the transition, dedicated to the death of the Old Year and to the Eve. Because this day, a king will be born, a king who will win the favors of the Goddess or, as it was demonstrated by Sir James Frazer in “The Golden Bough”, where the suitors will fight like lions against the old king and some day, he will be defeated and they will succeed him on the throne of the Moon.
Tomorrow about the vowels.
